SEDGEFIELD PLAYERS YOUTH SECTION (SPYS)

Every Sunday in the Parish Hall in Sedgefield
SPYS are not taking any new members at present-we are over-subscribed.

For 7-18 year olds.

The SPYS meet every Sunday in the Parish Hall in Sedgefield. Any child aged 7 plus is welcome to join: there is no weekly fee or audition but yearly subs are £10.

Our ethos as a group is ‘Drama for all’. We hope to encourage young people to develop skills as performers, but also as people, with a great emphasis on friendship, team-work, honesty, collaboration and confidence. We also encourage discipline within our training; SPYS are expected to wear uniform at all times and behave in the ways laid out for them by their tutors.

We use a mixture of games, performance techniques, singing classes, dance classes and acting workshops to get the most out of our SPYS.

Stage One: The Footlights

The Footlights are the youngest group of SPYS usually aged between 7 and 9. They spend time working with different vocal and physical exercises that help to build confidence, engender team spirit and excite their creative interests. The Footlights take part in the annual pantomime as members of the ensemble and try to include two theatre visits a year.

This group meets from 5.30 – 6.30 on a Sunday evening.
Stage Two: The Follow-Spots

The Follow-Spots are our intermediary group, usually aged between 10 and 13. They develop further skills including devising, improvisation and comedy in order to help continue to develop their progression as performers. The Follow-Spots also take part in the annual pantomime but will occasionally have speaking and dancing roles and try to include up to three theatre visits a year.

They meet from 5.30 – 7.30 on Sunday evenings.
Stage Three: The Floodlights

The Floodlights are our oldest section usually aged from 14 to 18. They undertake regular theatre trips, up to 10 times a year, and have taken trips to Edinburgh for the annual fringe festival. The Floodlights perform a play as part of the Sedgefield Drama Festival of One Act Plays in September and as such are the only group who work for the whole year. The Floodlights also have the opportunity to tour their work at other festivals around the region. The Floodlights often take lead roles in the annual pantomime and are expected to act as ambassadors for the group.

They rehearse from 5.30 – 7.30 on a Sunday evening and often 7.30 – 9.30 on a Wednesday, depending on the time of year.
